NATIONAL COACH MUSEUM

 

DESCRIPTION:

 

Created through the efforts of Queen Amélia of Orleans and Bragança, wife of King Carlos I, the Royal Coach Museum, as it was then named, was inaugurated on May 23, 1905.

Exceptional among the vehicles on exhibit are Coaches, Berlins, Carriages, Chaises, Cabriolets, Litters, Sedan Chairs and Children’s Carts making up an interesting collection that allows the visitor to understand the technical and artistic evolution of the means of transport used by the European courts until the appearance of the automobile.

In 2015 is inaugurated the new exhibition space, near the old museum site, the new Coach Museum emerges, not only, as a cultural site but also as a public utility space.

In the words of the architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha “the Museum has no doors and relates to all of its surroundings”. The project is more than a museum; in the end it functions as an urban infrastructure providing a public utility space for the city.

To accommodate visitors, restaurant services, a Museum Shop and a Tourist Information centre have been projected.

Minors:(comp. of their parents.- 12 to 17 years) – 4 €

Senior:(>65 years, proof of age must be shown) – 4 €

Child:(<12 years) - free
