SINTRA MONUMENTS

Most of the houses, palaces and convents in Sintra are relatively small in space. The main reason is the location where they were built, on the mountaintops or crusted in lush hillsides, with most of its foundations on large granite boulders.
Most constructions and renovations occurred on the second half of the nineteenth century, and talking about the architecture style of this place is like describing a dream, a Neo-Manueline and Late-Gothic style with Moorish influences, or a eclectic and romantic revivalism, with inspirations in a style from the fifteenth century, or simply a need to revive the nation's glorious past and valours, denying the way of life of that period which they lived in. The age of the industrial revolution, the appearance of cars, roads and the inevitable acceleration of life, led the creators to seek inspiration in the old pleasures of life, in the nature, in the opera, in the music, in the theater, culminating in an outburst of decorative freedom. So we can think then, the main objective of these creations are the dreams and they are just there for the visitor to have its own experience.
