DESCRIPTION:
Not very far from the historic centre of Sintra is one of the most beautiful architectural and landscape Romantic creations in Portugal: the Park and Palace of Monserrate, unique representatives of 19th century eclecticism.
One of the most famous visitors was Francis Cook, a extremely wealthy English industrialist, who was later decorated by King Luís with the title of Viscount of Monserrate and subrogated the estate in 1856. The effective acquisition of the property took place in 1863, with the architect James Knowles beginning the work of transforming what remained of the house built by Gerard de Visme (1789).
Displaying distinctly medieval and oriental-style influences, the decoration of the Palace of Monserrate makes it, along with the Palace of Pena, one of the most important examples of Romantic architecture in Portugal. The Palace combines gothic and Indian influences as well as Moorish suggestions together with exotic and plant motifs which are harmoniously extended to the exterior. The gardens have received species from all corners of the world, which were planted according to their geographical origin.

Leave this visit for the end, the Palace is located on the exit of the "Mountain of the Moon", heading to the Colares village and the Cape of Roca. We never found the Garden or the Palace full of visitors, perhaps because it's located a little away from the town of Sintra or because the big tour buses just don't go there. In this special place you will find the serenity and the beauty that characterizes Sintra. The front lawn of the Palace provides a well-deserved rest, while discovering one of the richest Portuguese botanical gardens.
Hillspot Tours strongly recommends the visit:
