DESCRIPTION:

 

The Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitoria, also called Monastery of Batalha is unquestionably one of the most beautiful works of Portuguese and European architecture.

This exceptional architectural complex resulted from the fulfillment of a promise made by King John I in gratitude for the victory in Aljubarrota battle against King Don Juan I of Castile, on August 14, 1385, which secured him the throne and secured the independence of Portugal.

The works lasted for over 150 years, several additions were introduced in the original design, resulting in a large monastery complex which currently has a church, two cloisters with outbuildings and two real pantheons: the Founder's Chapel and the "Unfinished" Chapels.

Integrates the List of World Heritage defined by UNESCO since 1983.
