DESCRIPTION:

 

The convent and church of St. Francis, built by King John II and completed in the reign of King Manuel I, was built on a primitive Gothic church of the thirteenth century, between 1480 and 1510.

Is closely linked to historical events that marked the period of maritime expansion of Portugal.

To the right of the main altar, the windows were used for the kings attend the mass, facing the priest, at a time when the priests do the religious services always with his back to the people.

 

THE OSSUARY CHAPEL:

Intriguing chapel is part of the Royal Church of San Francisco. Its walls are covered with human skulls and bones carefully arranged.

If you are sensitive, you better think twice before passing the archway that reads:

 

"We bones that are here, for your's we expect."

 

It was built in the sixteenth century by a Franciscan monk who wanted to transmit the message that life is merely a passage to Heaven or to Hell.
