CHURCH & MUSEUM OF CONVENT OF CARMO

 

DESCRIPTION:

 

The church of the Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was founded in 1389 by the Kingdom Constable, D. Nuno Alvares Pereira, to celebrate the Portuguese victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota, against Castilla. The temple was consecrated in 1423 and was, at the time, the greatest gothic church in Lisbon. It was severely affected by the Great 1755 Lisbon Earthquake, followed by a fire, but was in part restored during the reign of Queen Mary I.

Its aspect of false ruin was the result of the unfinished attempt at reconstruction, and provided the ideal romantic setting for the establishment of a museum. The church ruins were given to the Royal Association of Portuguese Architects and Archaeologists in 1864.
