ST. VICENTE DE FORA CHURCH & MONASTERY

 

DESCRIPTION:

 

São Vicente de Fora church originated from a monastery built in 1147 by D. Afonso Henriques (the first king of Portugal), in honour of São Vicente, Lisbon’s patron saint.

The expression "de fora" (means outside) was first used due to the location of the monastery, as it stands right outside the wall that then protected the city.

 

After the national restoration took place (thus granting independence to Portugal), D.João V ordered the construction of an imposing baroque altar, where eight monumental images made of wood and painted in white stand out. It is possible to visit the monastery (the visit is paid) through a lateral entrance.

Once inside, feel free to enjoy the several tiles panel (including a collection portraying La Fontaine’s fables), sacred art samples, the cloister and the vestry’s decorative splendour.

Additionally, you can visit the royal pantheon, where the members of the Bragança’s dynasty currently rest.

Don’t leave out the chance to climb to the top of the terrace: the panoramic view over the town and the Tagus River is a must-see.
