ITINERARY:

 

9 hrs Tour. Pick up at 9am. wherever you are in Lisbon / Sintra / Cascais.

We set out from Lisbon towards the village of Constância, a nice village near de junction of the two rivers Tagus and Zêzere, a very special place for its beauty, then after a technical and security briefing in the company of the monitors we enter the water in a canoe, we start in Zêzere river and then immediately enter the Tagus river. The descent is technically very easy. A gentle stream transports us leisurely downriver.

We pass by the coast of Ribatejo river beach, (vacation spot of Lisbon's elite nineteenth century) by the mansions at the riverbank, enjoying the fauna and flora of this protected area until we spot the distant Almourol Castle. Little by little we will be arriving next to this piece of history. Almost in the shadow of this ancient Castle, we realize the importance that must have had, in the achievements and the conquests of the territory that one day became Portugal.

We land on the island and we will visit the Castle (ticket included).

Must do is the climb up to it's tower... it is a breathtaking sight.

In the Castle you will be given an historical explanation about the construction and occupation of the fortress. We are in the lands of the Templars.

After the visit, we board in the canoes again, now for a route that rapidly approaches to the end of this descent. On the right bank and next to a large and old pier, we disembark in the village of Tancos, there we will see the registered measures of the floods of Tagus river in past years, you will be surprised by the height of the largest.

 

On the arrival to the beautiful city of Tomar you must try the local gastronomy, traditional food, cooked slowly, cozy, typical of this part of Portugal. 

Then we will head to the city center, the beautiful central park, the chapel of St. Baptist and the Republic Square, you will get to know one of the most important cities in the period of the conquest of Portugal from the Moors and the alliance of the first King of Portugal D. Afonso Henriques with the Knights Templar, next we will take you to the Castle and the Convent of Christ, the Headquarters of the Order in Portugal (ticket included).

We leave the lands of the Knights Templar heading to Lisbon, by the lands of "Ribatejo" to enjoy a beautiful landscape that we call "lezíria ribatejana", vast plains that follow the river Tagus, land of bulls and "Lusitano" horses.
